New to this

What happens at a sound meditation

Sound meditation is a branch of nada yoga, sound yoga, where sound is directed toward the body to move energy and quiet the mind. You lie down. Hamid plays gongs, Himalayan bowls, flutes, harmonium and voice. A well played gong throws off a wall of overtones that settles the mind faster than most people expect, which is why it sits at the center of his work.

You will see this called a sound bath, or sound healing. Hamid calls it sound meditation, because you are participating rather than receiving. It is a practice, not a treatment: nothing is done to you here, and nothing is a cure. That distinction is most of the work.

What to expect

Lying downMats, blankets and bolsters are usually provided.
LengthMost gatherings run about 90 minutes.
ExperienceNone needed, and nothing to prepare.
What to wearSomething comfortable. Bring a pillow if you like.
ArrivingTen minutes before the start. The doors close when it begins, because somebody walking in disturbs a session under way.

Training

Learn to play. Begin online, then deepen in person.

Hamid Jabbar has taught sound in Arizona since 2018. The groups are small, and you spend the time with your hands on the instruments, so you leave able to hold a room.

The online course is where most people begin. It carries the whole of Level I, so you arrive at the in person training already fluent in the theory.

Meet Hamid

A musician who kept following the sound

Hamid Jabbar went to NYU on a music scholarship, then to law school at UCLA, and practiced law in Los Angeles for a while before admitting that was not it. Since 2012 he has been studying gongs, singing bowls and flutes. He also co-directed the 200 and 300 hour yoga teacher trainings at Urban Yoga in downtown Phoenix, and he is an E-RYT 500 with Yoga Alliance.

These days he teaches sound, leads ceremony in Peru, and writes. Most of what he knows came from teachers who were generous with him, so he passes it on the same way.

Music

Hamid records, too

Gong, flute, harmonium, voice. Some of it is recorded from sessions and some of it was built in the room on purpose. It is on Bandcamp and Spotify, and it is a reasonable way to find out whether this sounds like something you want to lie down inside of.

Peru retreats

Ten days in the Sacred Valley

Each summer Hamid takes a small group to Peru’s Sacred Valley to sit with Huachuma, the San Pedro cactus, in ceremony led by a Maestro Huachumero. Two pathways, the Heart Path and the Fire Path, ten days each, with six months of support on either side. Everything about the retreats lives on his other site. Summer 2027 dates are coming.
